From the Executive Director

"I have not stopped giving thanks for you and remembering you in my prayers."

Ephesians 1: 16

Paul had heard about the faith of the Ephesians and was impressed. So much so that he spent most of the first chapter of his letter expressing his gratitude and encouraging them.  During this Christmas season, we are deeply grateful for you, our loyal supporters, and for the thousands who pray for and support this ministry.

As we hear Paul, he was also encouraging them to leave a legacy of love so that everyone who saw them would not forget the reason for such an expression.  Each year we receive hundreds of gifts given to the Christian Service Center in loving memory or in honor of a loved one.  For each of these gifts, a personal response is sent along with a special card acknowledging the gift.

I can't think of a more cherished way to honor a loved one or remember a special occasion than to extend help to our neighbors in need in their name!

Let me share a couple of stories of our neighbors ... an elderly gentleman had fallen from a broken wheelchair just outside our Orlando office.  We went to help him only to discover that the chair was not repairable.  Within a few minutes we had found a donated wheelchair, better than what he was using, and he went on his way with a thankful smile.

Or another .. the mother of one of our West Orange neighbors had experienced episodes of forgetfulness and disorientation.  It was impossible for the daughter to stay at home and keep her job, not to mention providing after school care for her child.  Our programs worked together to offer care for the aging grandmother through our Alzheimer's Respite Care Program, after-school care for the child through our West Orange Ministries and provided much needed support for our neighbor 'sandwiched" between two

generations.  It's people like these, and hundreds more, whose lives have been affected through your generosity.

At this time of year, we are reminded of an even greater gift ... one that has had an eternal effect on our world, our nation and each of our lives.  Like your gift in honor of a loved one, we treat each gift we receive in honor of the Savior we serve and whose birthday we celebrate.

During this holiday season, we have many things for which to be grateful ... the laughter of a child, the smiles of a friend or the touch of someone who needs our help.  But, most importantly, we are grateful for the Child born in a manger who gave the greatest gift of all, His life.

From the Staff and Board of Directors of the Christian Service Center, we extend our wishes for a wonderful Christmas and a joyous New Year.

And the Winner Is...

MickeyAt the 29th Annual Walt Disney, World Community Service Awards, the Christian Service Center received the Bob Allen Outstanding Community Service Award.  "We feel very grateful, very blessed to receive this top award," stated Robert Stuart, Executive Director of the Christian Service Center.  "We dedicate this award to all employees, supporters and volunteers of the Center."

"Our community is fortunate to have a strong network of service organizations like the Christian Service Center and its Daily Bread program," said Al Weiss, president of Walt Disney World Co.  "Each year, it is a privilege to make contributions through the Walt Disney World Community Service Awards to so many of the organizations that work to improve people's fives in Central Florida."

The Center was one of 73 non-profit, Central Florida organizations receiving a total of $500,000 at the Walt Disney World Community Service Awards.

Handmade Afghan Donated to Center

Doreen Shilling, Events Coordinator at Michael's located at West Oaks Town Center, presents a handmade afghan to CSC Employees, Haggeo Gautier and Robert Stuart.  A group of women from the West Orange community worked together to complete the afghan and asked the Center to donate it to a homeless individual who needed to keep warm during the winter.

Annual
Soup'R Sunday
Food Drive to he Held

For thousands of hungry people in Central Florida Super Bowl Sunday is just another day without a home or nourishing meal.  On Sunday, January 28, 2001, please join us for our annual Soup'R Sunday food drive.  Through your church, business, school or organization, you can help!  The Center began this area-wide food drive five years ago as a way to replenish our pantry after the busy holiday season.  We ask individuals to donate one can of soup or a perishable food item.  For more information on how to get involved, please call 407-425-2523, ext. 232.

Looking for a Holiday Project.?

We have received many phone calls from our supporters who are looking for a way to help the Christian Service Center this Holiday season. Below are a few ways you can help your neighbors in need.

  • Help keep others warm by donating winter coats (all sizes needed) and warm blankets.
  • Donate food items to our three area pantries. Of particular need are beans  canned potatoes, and canned fruit.
  • Help provide for an infant by donating baby diapers and formula.
  • Donate art and crafts supplies to our tutoring program.
  • Donate a cash gift in the name of a loved one.

If you would like to help with any of these projects, please call our Director of Volunteer Services, Kellie Prevost Pinel, at 407-425-2523, ext. 232.
