Youth Volunteer Wins Local  Award

Sarah SterlingCongratulations to Sarah Sterling, one of three students recognized by The Citizen's Commission for Children for outstanding volunteer service on behalf of the children and families of Orange County.

A senior at West Orange High School, Sarah is active in her school as well as her community.  She volunteers at the West Orange Christian Service Center, willingly doing whatever is asked or needed.  She serves as a tutor in the Early Student Intervention Program and is coordinator for the Token Economy Banking System, an incentive program for the students enrolled in the afterschool tutoring program.  She is a lunch server at the Daily Bread program, and is chairman of the Weekends program for West Orange High School.

"I saw the 'fruit' of my efforts blossom when a child I once tutored became a tutor herself.  She was struggling with math when we first met, and now is at the top of her class!  Now she is helping others the way I helped her."

Sarah is the daughter of Peg MacDonald, Director of the Center's West Orange Ministries.

2,000,000 and counting!
Touching lives...one meal at a time

Next month the Christian Service Center's Daily Bread program will celebrate the serving of its 2,000,000th meal by hosting community wide events to recognize its supporters and the people it serves.

On Wednesday, April 2 1, we will host a Street Celebration for the clients and neighbors of Orlando Daily Bread.  Daily Bread sites in Ocoee and Kissimmee will join our downtown campus as we enjoy great food, fun and entertainment.   Included will be clowns, face-painting and a moonwalk for kids of "all ages".

On Thursday. April 22, we will host a dinner at First Baptist Church of Orlando in recognition of our Daily Bread family of churches.   Approximately 150 churches have supported the program since its inception in 1975.   As we did with the 1,000,000th meal, we arc asking the churches to bring their banner with them for the Parade of Banners processional.  Invited speaker is Governor Jeb Bush.

Want to join the fun? Call Margaret Farris at 425-2523 for more information.

A New Name Means
More Services for the Community

Because our Alzheimer's Respite Care Program has grown to serve not only those persons with Alzheimer's disease but other frail elders as well, we have changed our name to better represent our mission.

Now called Community Based LongTerm Care, the Alzheimer's Respite Care Program is one component, while the ADNet program, a "doorway" to adult day-care services and the Interfaith Volunteers Caregivers Project are others.

Our new site, Share the Care - Windermere, has just received its license and should be available to serve by mid-March.  Located at St. Luke's United Methodist Church, this integrated adult day-care center will serve clients in the Williamsburg, Windermere and Southwest Orlando areas.   It will be licensed for up to 40 persons with memory and / or physical handicaps.  In May, we anticipate Share the Care - Orlando, serving the downtown and West Orlando community, to be complete and ready for service.  Located next door to the Administration building at 800 West Central Boulevard, Share the Care - Orlando, will serve dementia-specific individuals - those with Alzheimer's and other memory-related disorders.  It will be licensed for 34 individuals.

The addition of these sites to existing sites will allow us to more than double the number of clients we serve in 1999.  For more information about these programs or to volunteer your time, please call the Community Based Long-Term Care Division at 423-53 11.

R StuartA Landing on e moon, climbing Mt. Everest, running the four-minute mile all are milestones in human achievement Each milestone was met with struggle and a deep sense of accomplishment Lives were sacrificed, resources were committed and used, people were affected, lives were touched.

I can still remember the Sunday morning when Eagle, the capsule carrying Neil Armstrong and Ed Aldrin landed on the Sea of Tranquility I can still see our pastor pausing for prayer for those three men of Apollo 11 circling the Earth more than 200,000 miles away. In climbing Mt. Everest, stories are told of the men who lost their lives in the struggle to help Sir Edmund Hillary reach the top. And, as Roger Bannister crossed the finish line after running the first sub-four minute mile, the entire world stopped and reflected on his admirable accomplishment.

The Christian Service Center will celebrate a significant milestone this year One that reflects sacrifice sharing resources and touching peoples lives. In April, we will serve the 2,000,000 th meal in our Daily Bread programs. 2,000,000!

As I pause to reflect, my initial thought is to try to imagine 2,000,000 of anything - I can't. That number is so fantastic, so incredible that it requires we break it down into smaller, mom "bite-sized" amounts. From its start in 1975 to today, there are many who have been influential in its longevity.

First, we are thankful for the St. James Women's Guild who began this ministry, for Dr Howard Chadwick who shared its vision with restaurateur Champ Williams and for the many who offered their tireless work to start a ministry to offer food to those who could not afford a meal

Second, we are thankful to people who kept us going through the years, like 'Parky" Parkhouse, Rev. Bill Kiether, Dr Earl Scarbeary, Rev. James Blount, Mrs. Leona Brown, Host / Marriott (who took over the food preparation from Champ Williams) and the many others who cannot be mentioned in such a short article.

Third, we are thankful to the hundreds of churches and thousands of volunteers who have faithfully served each week more than two million meals since opening in July, 1975, Without this support, it simply would not have been done!

Fourth, we are thankful to the thousands of people who have helped us financially with the growing challenges of hunger and poverty in Central Florida, Your gifts are crucial to meeting this need - thank you!

Last, but most important, we are thankful to our God who through Jesus Christ has given us the example of service, To feed those who are hungry and offer a drink to the thirsty because of His command to serve.

You have stood behind us with your support, beside us in service and in front of us, inspiring us and others, to keep serving until Christ returns,

Thank you for helping us reach this milestone!

Center Establishes Mothers Helping Mothers -
Winter Park

At-risk families in the Winter Park / Eatonville area will now be served through our Mothers Helping Mothers program recently established in our Winter Park Family and Emergency Services facility.  In January, $10,000 was awarded to the program through the William B. Calkins Fund and the Winter Park Advisory General Purpose Fund from the Community Foundation for Central Florida.  This grant, coupled with $15,000 in funding from Heart of Florida United Way, will allow a case-worker to begin working with low-income and welfare mothers in the Winter Park / Eatonville area.

Patterned after Mothers Helping Mothers - West Orange, the goal of the program is to improve the lives of financially-challenged women and their families with educational and vocational training as well as other enrichment opportunities.

Working closely with churches and social service agencies in the Winter Park / Eatonville area, we anticipate selecting 10 families to receive support through this program.  For more information, please call Kyle McNeil at 628-1692.

Take a "Time Out" for Prayer and Reflection

Holy Week Services, sponsored by the Christian Service Center and First Presbyterian Church of Orlando, will be held Monday -Thursday, March 29-April 1, in the Reformation Chapel at 12:05 p.m.  The service will last approximately 25 minutes and each day is led by clergy from one of the downtown churches.   A light lunch will be available at the end of each service for $3 .00 in the Allen Hall Parlor.

On Good Friday, April 2, "The Way of the Cross" will begin at 11:40 a.m. from the steps of the Orange County Courthouse.  The procession will pass down Magnolia until it reaches First Presbyterian Church, where a Holy Week Community Service will be held in the Sanctuary.  Communion will be celebrated.  A light lunch will be served in the Fellowship Hall immediately following the service.

Join us, won't you?  For more information, please call Margaret Farris at 4252523.

Soup R' Sunday - Everyone Wins!

The Denver Broncos may have won the Super Bowl, but the real winners are the hundreds of fans who collected canned goods on behalf of those less fortunate in our community.  Whether at church or at the office, hundreds of you turned out in force to make Soup R' Sunday the most successful to date.  Over 4,000 cans of meats, vegetables, fruits, rice and pasta were collected for the Center's food pantry's in Orlando, Winter Park and Ocoee.

What a beautiful site to see our food pantries replenished!  Many thanks to the following participants:

Fresh Start: 5,876 hours of client support was provided to 81 men, each staying an average of 92 days.

Alzheimer's Respite Care Program: more than 40,000 hours of service was provided to 562 unduplicated clients,

West Orange Ministries: more than 8,700 client hours were provided to 55 families in the West Orange community.

Hotel Ministry: 4,226 attended worship services raising over $11,000 through weekly offerings.

Thrift Store: more than 3,000 articles of clothing were given away to over 790 families.

Morgan, Colling & Gilbert.. for the People

Truer words could not be said!  When our Alzheimer's Respite Care Program's van "ran out of steam" recently, Christian Service Center Board member Zander Clem came to the rescue.  An attorney with Morgan, Colling & Gilbert and a vocal advocate of elder issues, Zander offered his firm's van so that we were able to continue providing transportation services to our clients in need.   Approximately 20 persons depend on our van to take them to and from the neighborhood and / or day care sites each week.  Thanks to Morgan, Colling & Gilbert, no one missed a day of service.
