Executive Director's Report
Whether you were among the millions who spent their Memorial Day Weekend watching "Pearl Harbor," or may not have seen it yet, you have certainly spent time talking about it. Pearl Harbor, after all, was a defining moment in our history and in the lives of millions of Americans and still is today.

As many people, I was fascinated in the historical Pearl Harbor and the state-of-the-art computer graphics portraying realistic sounds and visual effects. My wife was captured by the love story of men and women separated by war and reunited under the worst of circumstances. However, there is a moment during the film that captured us both. It was the words of Alec Baldwin playing Col. Jimmy Doolittle. "There is nothing stronger than the heart of a volunteer."

Sometimes Hollywood catches onto what the general public has known all along. When this occurs, each of us say, "That’s right! You’ve finally got it!"

Let me say that for 30 years, the Christian Service Center has gotten it! Volunteers have been the backbone of our first gathering in 1971 and they continue through our events

"There is
nothing
stronger
than the
heart
of a
volunteer."

Col. James "Jimmy" Doolittle, Pearl Harbor, The Movie

taking place for our 30th Anniversary. Volunteers are our lifeblood and our inspiration.

Just this morning, a lifelong volunteer showed up with bags of underwear for our Fresh Start men – a gift for those in need – not asked for but prayed for nonetheless. Another volunteer cleaned out her closets at home and gave items to our thrift store. Some of these items were given away and others were sold to provide much needed resources to help us care for our neighbors in need. Still another couple provided encouragement for us by sending us a kind note along with contribution.

As we pause to look at the past, it is without question, volunteers have kept us running for 30 years. And for that we extend our deepest gratitude - Thank you!

P.S. Please take a moment and remember the work of the Christian Service Center during the summer months. While many of our supporters take a break, unfortunately poverty does not. Thanks!

United Way Funding Continues

For four years, the Heart of Florida United Way and the Christian Service Center have joined together to help feed the hungry and care for our most frail elderly. This year, the organization has agreed to assist in funding two new start-up projects at the Center. The first program, called "Emergency Management for Seniors" (EMS) provides for support services in the homes to persons caring for homebound loved ones and makes emergency support accessible to live-alone elders on a short-term basis. The second new project will allow the Center to provide in-home support for at risk families involved in our Mothers Helping Mothers program in West Orange. Thank you to all who support the Heart of Florida United Way!

West Orange Art Show & Auction

The West Orange Ministries of the Christian Service Center sponsored an art exhibition and auction on June 9th at St. Luke’s United Methodist Church. Avatar, formerly Heisman Galleries, conducted the exhibition and auction which raised over $3,000!

Pictured above are Peg MacDonald (Director, West Orange Ministries), Pete Peterzell (Art Auction Co-Chair), Rev. Mike Yoakum (CSC President), and Rosi McFarland (Art Auction Co-Chair). A special thank you to our Board of Directors, and also Lynette Fields (not pictured) for her outstanding job in gathering volunteers to help that evening.

A winner

In addition to the art auction, a children’s art contest was held. Ten of the children’s drawings were selected for greeting card covers. The all-occasion greeting cards were on sale at this event for only $5. We have plenty of packages left, so please call us to get yours today!

Hundreds Gather for 30th Anniversary Prayer Breakfast

Over 500 supporters gathered on Friday, June 1st to celebrate the Christian Service Center’s 30th anniversary in Downtown Orlando. Rev. Haggeo Gautier, the Center’s Director of Crisis Ministries, delivered a touching community prayer. Amanda Ober, WESH-TV Reporter and Anchor, was the morning’s Mistress of Ceremonies. Linda Wells, a former board member of the Center and wife of Florida Supreme Court Justice Charles T. Wells, spoke about the early days of the Center as well as an amusing briefing on the impact of last year’s US Presidential election on her family.

Volunteer Spotlight:

Written by Cheryl Favis, ARCP Volunteer Coordinator

Alzheimer’s Respite Care: ARCP would like to recognize Sarah Friedel and Michael Canady for being wonderful volunteers. Sarah and Michael are both students at the University of Central Florida. They started volunteering with ARCP as part of a project in school but have continued their dedication even after they have completed the required hours. They are responsible, dependable, and kindhearted. These are all the qualities that describe a good volunteer! Dennis Rivera, the neighborhood coordinator of both Lake Mary and Oviedo states "Sarah and Michael have very big hearts. You can truly see their devotion towards the clients. The clients surely do love them and it shows!" Let’s all give them a big hand. Way to go guys!

Osceola Daily Bread:

Written by Beverly Spangler, Osceola Daily Bread

It is with great pride that we salute Vernon and Dorothy Forrest of Poinciana. These two very active senior citizens have adopted Osceola Daily Bread as their favorite place to be when they are not serving in the Cold Night Program of their church or at the clothes closet of the Osceola Christian Ministry. In their spare time, they tend a large yard that they maintain beautifully in spite of several recent health problems this year. Vernon loves to grow African Violets, as well. These two outstanding volunteers have much love to share!

Fresh Start:

Written by Kellie Prevost, Volunteer Director

RichardRichard Messier was instrumental in the founding of our Fresh Start program thirteen years ago; a program dedicated to restoring the lives of men in downtown Orlando. Fresh Start is a home for 25 men from the streets to help them get back into life, a life many have lost along the way. Richard has been seen spending time with the men and often provides the only transportation to get to a much needed job. He has provided jobs to employ some of the men and has many times ducked into our thrift store to purchase clothes for the Fresh Start men. Twice a month, for the past thirteen years he, his family and his co-workers come down after work to provide the men with three meals each visit. Richard has been an encouragement to all of our churches who provide meals for Fresh Start. Besides his unending commitment to our clients, Richard serves on several committees and volunteers at other events throughout the year. But it is his heart and commitment to the welfare and hope of the homeless that has had an overwhelming impact to the lowest in our community. He has offered a fresh start to so many who come through our Center.

ARCP Changes Name to Share the Care

Effective July 1st, the Alzheimer’s Respite Care Program (ARPC) changed its name to Share the Care - Services and Support for Family Caregivers. This change was made to give families who are in need of our services better access to our program. Share the Care is not just specifically for families who have loved ones suffering from Alzheimer’s Disease but also for those that have other memory impairment as well as to the frail elderly.

In other news, Share the Care will be operating the counseling area for caregivers and their families at the Memory Disorder Clinic at Orlando Regional Healthcare.

As always, Share the Care is in need of volunteers at our respite sites, especially at our neighborhood centers located in Lake Mary, Oviedo, and Washington Shores. Please call if you are interested in volunteering at 407-423-5311.

Join us for a Special Worship Service at Disney

As part of our ongoing 30th year celebration, a special service will be held on Sunday, August 12th at the Walt Disney World Polynesian Resort at 9:00 a.m. Each Sunday morning, the Center provides a Protestant worship service to the guests and employees at Disney. Leading us on this special day will be Mr. Ed Soistman, leading his 200th worship service for our Hotel Ministry program. We would like to thank Ed and the other pastors who help each Sunday!

Credit card donations now accepted

The Gift that Keeps on Giving

Many of our supporters receive great satisfaction in donating cash gifts to our Center, but did you know that we also accept gifts of stock, mutual fund shares, life insurance, life income gifts, and real estate? This ensures that your gift will keep on giving. In fact, your giving potential may be greater than you anticipated. To find out more about donating gifts to the Center, please contact Bob at 407-425-2523 ext. 229.
