Coronavirus/COVID-19 Precautions –
November 1, 2020 - As this health epidemic continues to change, we will post new updates on our website and social media. We have adjusted our serving policy in-line with the latest CDC guidelines to serve in a way that best protects both our volunteers and clients. "Social distancing" recommendations are in place to separate volunteers and client traffic.
Clients are now being served via take-out. Volunteers prepare meals inside the kitchen and Daily Bread staff distribute meals in "clamshell" containers to clients outdoors. Our usual policy it to not allow anyone who appears sick and is showing flu-like symptoms to come into the dining room. We can provide a meal for them in a way outdoors in a way that won’t impact others. Our volunteers are equipped with face masks, gloves and apron protection while our kitchens are always cleaned and disinfected each day.
Additional alcohol-based hand sanitizer is available and we an additional layer of cleaning and disinfecting of tables and chairs in the dining room. In West Orange Daily Bread, its smaller dining hall is closed to guests, and meals are served in “clamshells” to clients outside in the parking lot.
Daily Bread was established in 1975 with the goal that no person in Central Florida struggle with hunger. Through Daily Bread, anyone who is hungry can eat for free, no questions asked. Daily Bread provides a nourishing noontime meal for families and individuals who are hungry six days a week at no cost to the consumer. In March 2018, Daily Bread reached a major milestone serving its 4,500,000th meal to the Central Florida community!
A STORY BUILT ON FAITHFULNESS
When Daily Bread began in 1975, the program distributed vouchers for clients to eat at local restaurants. Through the incredible support of several Central Florida churches, restaurants, grocers, hotels and bakeries a Daily Bread dining hall was built in 1987. Here, thousands of meals were consistently prepared off-site and delivered to the facility by a restaurateur named Champ Williams, and later through the commitment of Host Marriott. Then, in 1997 a vision to prepare food within Daily Bread’s facility came to life, and the building was remodeled to include a commercial kitchen where meals could be prepared and served on-site.
Today, Daily Bread continues to serve six days a week from two Central Florida locations: Downtown Orlando and West Orange County (Ocoee), serving about 350 meals per day! Following our scriptural calling, it is significant to us that Daily Bread be available at no cost and with no participation criteria. If someone comes hungry, they shall be served a meal.
